What are Betta Fish?

Welcome!

Hi there people!  If you're visiting this page, you probably have no idea what a betta fish is.  Well, read on and find out!  Enjoy!

Jessica

A betta fish, otherwise known as a Siamese fighting fish, is a fish that has been
bred by humans to have fantastic colors and long fins, which are bred to have different patterns.  They breathe air.

The technical information, in case you're more scientific: the fish is a member of the gourami family (family Osphronemidae) of order Perciformes, but was formerly classified among the Anabantidae. Although there are nearly 50 other members of the Betta genus, B. splendens is one of the most popular species among aquarium hobbyists.  They can live 2-5 years in captivity.

I find this fish quite beautiful--sorry, Eragon, handsome.  For more information, visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betta_fish, my source of info.
