Betta fish are very interesting.  Their scientific name is Betta splendens.  They are labrynith fish.  They breathe air.  They have to have a bacteria cycle to live.  These carnivores live off neglect in the wild, or mud puddles in rice patties in Asia and Thailand.  Since they live in mud puddles, they have evolved to breathe air and like being in smaller tanks.  Now, in the wild, they are a dull green and brown with shorter fins, so no one really notices them.  They were selectively bred to have long fins and brilliant colors on their bodies.  They were also bred to fight.  Visit  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betta_fish, my source, for more info.
